‘But they were exhausted already, Sir, from yesterday. The soldiers have had little sustenance or sleep since,’ the captain simply shrugged and said it was the general’s orders. We were to cross No Man’s Land at dawn. I walked out of the tent, back to my station. The trenches were quiet and empty, only the sound of gunfire cracked through the silence. At that moment, a thought came into my mind. It was treason, but it would save my life. I pulled off my dog-tag and tossed it onto No Man’s as I ran away from the trenches in fear and hope.
